YNF Engineering: Locomotive 4-Post Jacking System
A modular Siemens PLC with decentralised I/O proposed to replace a burnt-out Omron control system on a locomotive 4-post jacking system.

Scope of work
Control system redesign, PLC replacement with distributed I/O
Project overview
YNF Engineering refurbishes locomotives and passenger carriers and manufactures locomotive parts. Their 4-post jacking system, four posts with induction motors coupled to reduction gearboxes driving four jacks up and down to lift heavy locomotive equipment or the locomotives themselves, had broken down. It previously ran on an Omron PLC with I/O cards hardwired to the CPU. A surge in the circuit reached the CPU and burnt the PLC and the I/O cards. The client wanted a more modular system with the CPU decentralised from the I/O cards, and Ivevane proposed a new Siemens PLC with ET200SP distributed I/O, shown below.
